What Is a Metal Coil Slitting Line?


A metal coil slitting line is an industrial processing machinery that unwinds a master coil, slices it into multiple narrower strips, and rewinds those strips into smaller coils - all at high speed and with high precision.



How Does a Metal Coil Slitting Line Operate?

Step 1: Coil Loading and Uncoiling

  • A loading coil car loads the metal coil onto the uncoiler
  • The uncoiler unwinds the coil at a controlled speed
  • Hydraulic expansion holds the coil tightly in place


Step 2: Coil Leveling and Pinch Roll Feeding

  • The strip passes through a pinch roll and leveling device to align the coil edges
  • It ensures the material feeds staight into the slitter without deviation


Step 3: Slitting (Main Cutting Process)

  • The coil enters the slitter, where circular blades mounted on upper and lower shafts cut the strip
  • Each blade position corresponds to the desired strip width
  • Scrap edge trims are separated using edge trimmers and scrap winders


Step 4: Tension Control & Loop Pit

  • After slitting, the strips enter a loop pit then tension station to absorb slack and stabilize feeding
  • Proper tension prevents coil buckling or wrinkling during rewinding


Step 5: Recoiling

  • Each slit strip is rewind into an individual coil on the recoiler
  • A separator unit helps guide each strip and avoid overlap or scratching 
  • At the end of the process, finished coils are strapped and removed by an unloading car
