What Causes Blade Failure in Using Metal Coil Slitting Line

Latest company news about What Causes Blade Failure in Using Metal Coil Slitting Line

Introduction: Blade Integrity Is Crucial to Coil Processing Quality

In a metal coil slitting line, the slitting blades are the heart of the cutting system. They determine not just the accuracy of the slit width, but also the edge quality, recoil stability, and overall efficiency of the entire production.

However, frequent blade failures can lead to:

  • Poor product quality
  • Unplanned downtime
  • Increased tooling costs
  • Safety hazards

Common Causes of Blade Failure in Slitting Lines

1. Imporper Blade Material for the Application

Not all blades are created equal. Using low-grade or incorrect material for hign-strength steel or stainless steel can lead to:

  • Rapid edge wear
  • Microcracks
  • Heat-related deformation

At Kinbenz, we use slitting blades made of forged 42CrMo, hardened and tempered for excellent durability and toughness.

2. Wrong Blade Clearance

Clearance is the space between the upper and lower blades. If this is:

  • Too tight: excessive friction, blade chipping
  • Too loose: burrs and poor edge quality

Clearance must match material thickness and type.

3. Incorrect Regrinding or Blade Sharpening

Regrinding blades without proper equipment or angles can cause:

  • Uneven edges
  • Blade imbalance → vibration → premature bearing damage
  • Increased cutting resistance

Always grind blades using professional equipment and maintain the original bevel angle recommended by the machine supplier

4. Incorrect Slitting Speed or Line Tension

High slitting speed combined with high line tension can:

  • Overheat the blades
  • Cause edge hardening and cracking
  • Lead to uncontrolled strip oscillation

Blade Failure Signs You Should Watch For

Sign Possible Issue
Excessive burr on slit edge Clearance too wide / dull blade
Knife chatter or vibration Loose shaft or blade imbalance
Burn marks on edge Overheating / too much tension
Blade chips or cracks Incorrect setup or unsuitable material
